First pieces from C7's Covert Actions

Okay, so it's not LWAG bestiary internals I can show next... :)
I've painted a lot of pieces for Covert Actions, a supplement for C7's World War Cthulhu: Cold War, and these are the first three to leave NDA.

Instagram

You can now find me on Instagram, if that's you're social media platform of choice. I'm gradually adding my various pieces of artwork to it, and it's got a really clean layout that's quite appealing - no hassle, just pictures (even if they're not ever especially big, but still).

C7's Bestiary of the Beyond Cover

Honestly, I do a lot more over at C7 than just paint covers! But... for now I can show another cover, with the internals for this one coming up next (well, probably, depending on what else leaves NDA).

Anyway, this is the companion book to the Magnamund Menagerie, and features a whole lot of nasties:

And here's what it looks like dressed up nicely for print:

C7's Oaths of the Riddermark Cover

The next cover I painted for C7's The One Ring line, and it was all about the Meduseld, the Golden Hall of Rohan during a ritual featuring the king, his bodyguards, a girl offering up a chalice, and some warriors bowing, offering their weapons to the king and preparing to drink from the chalice when it was their turn.

Possibly the biggest challenge was handling the gold. What did it mean? Surely not a hall covered in gold, that didn't feel right for the setting. I settled on a play of light and rich fabrics to give the impression of gold, but I still wanted a hint of greens present because, after all, this is Rohan. But... how much green? And with green and gold, how do I find room for the hotter colours the characters would need in order to stand out? I ended up spending most of my sketch time playing with colour, since I was fairly confident in how the lighting, the tones, would play out.

Anyway, here's my painting (these cover pieces always require a little extra room around each edge so that there's room to play with the final placement when it goes to print):

And of course, here's the final version after Paul Bourne had applied some TOR-themed graphics to it (this is what you'll see when you buy the book):

C7's The Road Goes Ever On Cover + gif

My 2nd cover for C7 was unveiled recently, and... it was a bit of a strange one! The premise was of a group of adventurers looking at a piece of Tolkien-esque scenery, suggesting they've embarked on an unspecified journey. The sky would be replaced with a map (the map and all graphics were provided by the excellent Paul Bourne), but I had only an idea of the colour scheme as I began my painting. No issues, though, as Paul had the sketch and knew where it was all heading.

 This is my final painting:

And this is the final, after Paul had worked on it:

C7's Bree Cover

Here's the cover for C7's TOR expansion, Bree, and I'm really excited to show it as it was the first cover for The One Ring that I painted - feels like a pretty big deal, and I was actually pretty happy all the way through it! I didn't even feel there was an 'ugly stage' to this piece, it just came together smoothly. First up is the actual piece I created (covers can sometimes look a tad odd compositionally, given the extra room needed for text and bleed, and sometimes just so the layout artists can play about to find the best placements for all the different elements on the cover):

And this is what the final, finished cover looks like, with amazing graphic design from Paul Bourne:

It also seems to have been pretty well received by the game's fans, so I'm feeling good about that and very much looking forward to the next TOR cover I can sink my teeth into.

Street Art

Later this week I'll be submitting an application to paint at Upfest this year, which is pretty exciting! The submission will be as part of a 4-man crew, but for the moment I wanted to drop examples of my street art work here, to collect them and give them a place on the sketch blog.

It might be fun to look back at what I did in order to organise the Ludlow Paint Jam, but that's for another post - this one's all about the works created.
